What It's Like to be a Mentor on Amazing Talker

So , I have been reading various inaccuracies on sites for online ESL teachers and, well, that's what has brought me back to my keyboard ( like I ever left haha). The latest is that Amazing Talker mentors get a part of their mentees money on every lesson they provide. WRONG! Another, we ask about a potential teacher's age. WRONG! It's a pyramid scheme. WRONG! The people that really make money are the recruiters. WRONG! Teachers work 40-50 hours a week for 5-7 $ . WRONG!

So Let's Set the Record Straight

1. Mentors don't take any of the money that teachers make.We get paid a bonus through the platform fees which everybody pays. A small percentage. What people neglect to say is that mentors spend alot of time trying to help their mentees. We help them with their profile , their video and making them as marketable as possible. This all is done wayyyyyyy before we get any kind of bonus.

2. I have never asked nor do I know of any mentor that has asked someone about their age. In fact , it's great to have a teacher that has loads of experience. Especially if they are up to speed with technology.

3. It's not a pyramid scheme. When you make $2000 , you can become a mentor if you want. This entails alot of training and searching for good mentees that will in turn want to become mentors themselves. It's not passive income , it's more like non-teaching income. Remember you still have to spend time and energy on your team.

4. I think I have made maybe recruited 3 or 4 people in the 2.5 years that I've been on the platform . So obviously , this could by no means support claims that people are making money only by recruiting.

5. I don't know anybody in a team of 200 teachers that work 40-50 hours and NOBODY  is working for $5-7 an hour . Maybe that was seen for a trial lesson ( which is 25 min. and is for a student that is looking for a teacher to buy a package from) but not for a 50 minute lesson.

6. The comission is actually far less than most of the platforms out there. For every $100 you make , 1% is taken off of the commission. So ultimately , if you are working full-time, you end up paying very little in commission. If you make $3000 you pay zero commission. It takes a little time and patience but you can get there.

Take the Time and Research

I see many posts on social media that ask questions that you could easily find answers to on Google or Youtube. If you are truly interested in teaching online, you should take the time to research your options ,the market in general and what online teaching entails. Before I quit my job in a brick and mortar school, I researched day and night for about 2 months before I took the plunge. I needed to have an educated opinion on what I was getting myself into. If I would have listened to what was being said , I would have never done anything and ultimately remained in a dead end job.

We all know that things aren't as easy as it was when I first started but there is alot of work out there. Just think that, there aren't enough English teachers in the world to cover the needs of all the people that want to learn the language. So maybe you might have to start out with lower fees and fewer classes but if you are adament and professional , you will make it happen. If you don't know how to start , that's when a good mentor can help.

I realize that everybody has their own experience. I realize that everybody has their own story to tell, but to outwardly lie or mislead people can negatively influence a potentially successful teacher.
